Does the top separate from the rest of the unit for cleaning?

It does. There is a milk pitcher that you set on heating unit. You can then remove the milk pitcher after milk is heated. The milk pitcher also has a top that has a covered hole so if you want to add in syrup while heating you can. Hope this helps
